078: System Monitor - Logging to File for Multiple IP Offices

When a Small Community Network (SCN) or other network has been configured, it is often desirable to centrally manage all of the IP Office systems, and limit the number of PCs used to run IP Office applications, in order to reduce costs and simplify system management.

For example, running one VoiceMail Pro server across a SCN is more cost effective than one per site.

As part of Avaya’s drive to increase maintainability and reduce the cost of ownership, this tip details how to configure a single PC to provide centralised System logging for multiple IP Offices.

In order to use the System Monitor application to log to file for multiple IP Office systems using a single PC you must do the following:

 

  1. Install the correct System Monitor version for the version of IP Office software installed. This will be the version of System Monitor that was supplied with the Administration CD used to install or alternatively upgrade the IP Office systems.

  2. Create a different directory for each IP Office to be monitored, in a memorable location. An example would be a directory under the existing System Monitor folder –

C:\Program Files\Avaya\IP Office\System Monitor\System 1
C:\Program Files\Avaya\IP Office\System Monitor\System 2
C:\Program Files\Avaya\IP Office\System Monitor\System 3

  1. Copy the "sysmonitor.exe" from its installed location into each directory that was created in step 2 above.

The usual installed location for the System Monitor application is -

C:\Program Files\Avaya\IP Office\System Monitor

  1. For each IP Office System, run the sysmonitor.exe in the relevant directory and select an appropriate filename in log preferences -

File/Log Preferences/Log Filename.

The Log Preferences tab for the System monitor application can also be used to select other log options. These should also be set for each system.

The IP Office unit and password should also be set for each system at this time, along with the filters that should be monitored.

  1. Rollover each log by clicking the ‘rollover log’ button. Data should start collecting automatically. It is advisable to review the logs collected after a short period of time in order to confirm this.
